Was Goldilocks Telling the Truth? — Thermal Energy Transfer Investigation

Turn a familiar fairy tale into an engaging, student-designed science investigation!

Goldilocks claims that when she arrived at the Three Bears' cottage, one bowl of porridge was too hot, one was too cold, and one was just right. But could three bowls of the same porridge really end up at three different temperatures?

In this hands-on thermal energy investigation, students become the scientists! After examining the Goldilocks story, students develop and carry out a fair test to investigate factors that could affect how quickly the “porridge” cools. Students choose to investigate bowl size, bowl material, or the amount of water, giving them meaningful choice while keeping the investigation manageable for the classroom. 

Designed with Grades 4–6 in mind, this resource provides enough structure to support students—and teachers who may be newer to student-designed investigations—without taking away the inquiry. Students identify what they will change, what they will measure, and what they must keep the same before designing their investigation and collecting evidence. 

Students will:

  • Connect a familiar story to the science of thermal energy transfer

  • Ask questions and share initial ideas through Think-Pair-Share

  • Learn what makes an investigation a fair test

  • Choose a variable to investigate

  • Develop a testable question and hypothesis

  • Plan and carry out an investigation

  • Work collaboratively using assigned science-team roles

  • Measure and record temperature data

  • Identify patterns in their results

  • Use a Claim-Evidence-Explanation format to explain their findings

  • Use their evidence to decide: Was Goldilocks telling the truth?

The resource includes a teacher-guided PowerPoint presentation with instructional notes as well as a coordinating student investigation packet, making it easy to guide students through the entire process from the opening mystery to their evidence-based conclusion. Your teacher notes also include practical implementation guidance such as group organization, investigation approval, safety expectations, and using hot water rather than actual porridge.
